Ethel Beasley Sherman, age 90, died peacefully on July 3, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Stephen Beasley and Mary Jane Floyd Beasley. She was born in Granville County on November 28, 1928, and resided in Granville County with her late husband, James Sherman.

Ethel graduated from High School in 1949 and immediately went to work as secretary for the Accounting Office of Louise Royster. Later she became manager of Green’s Jewelry Store where she worked until joining James at their family owned business, Sherman Hardware. She was an active member of West Oxford Baptist Church working with girls in action and women’s circle as well as teaching Sunday school and bible school. She was an active volunteer with the Webb High School Band, the American Cancer Society, the Granville County Elections Board, as well as throughout the Oxford community. She loved the mountains, snow, and red birds. She had an amazing sense of humor and loved her ice cream. Mostly she loved caring for others. Whether she was making a banana pudding for the girls at the hospital lab or a chocolate pie for someone who had experienced a loss, Mrs. Ethel always had time to help a family member or friend. She spent countless hours helping others get to their doctors appointments or get their cars worked on or more importantly get their hair done. She adored her family and enjoyed being involved in all activities revolving around her children and grandchildren. Her greatest gift was her positive outlook on life. For Ethel Sherman, there was something bright in everyone and everything.

Ethel is survived by her children, William Richard Sherman (Debi) of Iowa; Frank Beasley Sherman (Laurie) of Georgia; Nan Sherman Williams (Tony) of Oxford, NC; Debbie Ann Sherman (Sherri) of Wilmington, NC; Linda Sherman Phelps (Steve) of Oxford, NC. She is survived by her 2 siblings, Richard Beasley of Greensboro, NC and Nellie Birkenholz of Texas. Ethel had 8 beautiful grandchildren; Jay Williams, Jennifer Nease, Allison Williams, Kimberly Jackson, Benjamin Sherman, Jessica Sherman, Brian Phelps, and Melissa Phelps. She is also survived by 10 adoring great-grandchildren, Carson and Boone Nease; Harrison, Colton, Beckett, Caroline and Jamison Williams; Wyatt and Everleigh Phelps; and Miles Jackson. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents and husband, James; and 7 siblings, Walter Beasley, Henry Beasley, George Beasley, Edward Beasley, Hattie Bryant, Lillian Kirkland, Eunice White and Edith Peoples.

A visitation will be held for family and friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at Gentry-Newell and Vaughan Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:00 pm in the Chapel at Gentry-Newell and Vaughan and officiated by Rev. William Jackson. Burial to follow at Meadowview Memorial Cemetery.
