Sarah Giles Donaldson

The community was saddened to learn of the death of Sarah Giles Donaldson, wife of William L. Donaldson, of Newark, which occurred at the State St. hospital of Portland ME, Sept 11 after an illness of only three weeks of peritonitis following an operation for intestinal obstruction on Aug. 25.

Sarah Giles, youngest daughter of William Giles, was born in Tipperary Ireland, Oct 13 1863, and came to Canada when 19 years of age. In 1885 she was united in marriage to William Donaldson of Compton PQ, and later came to Newark to live with her oldest child. To them were born seven children, all of whom are living but one, next to the youngest who died in infancy. She was a loving wife and mother and to know her was to love her, she worked hard on the home farm until seven years ago this November when they moved to Maine to a warmer climate. Three years ago last March she underwent an operation for hernia and complications and had been quite well until her death and was up here only six weeks before to a family reunion at her oldest daughter's in Orleans. She was taken sick suddenly and taken to the hospital and operated upon and lingered for 18 days. All was done that living hands could do and all her children were with her but her oldest daughter who was unable to go, and she passed away Sept 11 at 4:20 pm after a painful illness.

All who knew her loved her and she always had a kind word for everyone. Sympathy goes out to the bereaved husband and family who are left to mourn her loss. She was brought to West Burke Monday where prayer was held at her son's home. Services were held Tuesday at the Methodist church at Newark conducted by Rev Fred Engel of West Burke and she was laid to rest in the Newark St cemetery by the side of her child who died in infancy. Mrs. James Ball rendered two of her favorite hymns. "Just Beyond", and "Throw out the Life Line". The flowers were many and beautiful and showed the love and esteem in which she was held. A broken wreath with the words "Darling Wife:, a pillow "Mother", spray with "Grandma", spray neighbors, spray from Donald Cone, spray from Milton Smith, Mrs Clifford Smith of White River, lovely spray of crimson roses from Mr and Mrs Carleton Clark of Maine and a spray from her niece in Maine, spray from Mr and Mrs Warren S. Wheeler of Orleans and many others.

Those who are left to mourn her loss are her husband, her oldest son William H. of Newport, Benj. A. of Newark, John W. of West Burke, David J. of Maine, her oldest daughter Johanna (Mrs D.A. Benney) of Orleans, youngest (Katheryn) Mrs. Donald Cone of White River. 13 grandchildren, a sister, Mrs Thomas Stuart of Maine, and a host of friends.

The bearers were Elmer Coe, Harris Packer, Chas LaClair, and Orlo Parks, friends of the deceased.
