Hermann was born in Barmen-Wuppertal, Germany on June 2, 1859. He had an older brother (Friedrich) and a younger sister(Hulda). At the age of five he and his siblings lost both parents the same day and became orphaned. His mother died in childbirth. Perhaps with the birth of his younger sister Hulda. His father died of a stroke later that same day. They were raised by family friends. Herman and his older brother became sailors in the Imperial German Navy. His older brother later worked as a civil employee. Hermann was assigned to the S.M.S. Vineta, a three masted corvette of the Arcona Class Warship. He spent some time in Kobe, Japan on this ship according to letters sent home to his family. He later became a merchant marine and that's how he came to America.
He met Katherina on one of his voyages to Philadelphia on the SS Switzerland of the Red Star Line sailing out of Antwerp, Belgium. and decided that he wanted to stay. They married September 12,1885 at St. Micheal German Lutheran Church at Franklin Street below Vine in Philadelphia, PA. He became an American citizen in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court on September 18, 1888. The Philadelphia City Directory, he was listed as a Lager. Perhaps this means a Brewer or Brewmaster. All early listings showed their residence at 1040 N. 4th Street. In 1902 they moved to Egg Harbor City, NJ. On September 15th. 1903 he bought the Continental Hotel on Philadelphia Ave. from Charles Dammann. He operated the Rats Kellar and his wife Katherine was chef and managed the hotel. The following year he passed away in the middle of the night from a heart attack.
