John's wife, Lula B Couchman, was no longer in the household by 1880. It is calculated that John returned to his father's farm, taking with him his one-year-old son, Joseph. John helped his father, Nelson, with the family farm. The man who probably raised John's son, Joseph, was Nelson Bishop along with his wife, Tempy. Census reports show that he was a Farmer. A Minnesota Death Card showed a date of 1903 for the death of John Bishop in Minnesota during a blizzard. A newspaper article reported that his body was never found.
