Mary Brust
MOLINE — Mary Helen Brust, known at Sacred Heart Church as the “candle lady,” passed peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 7, 2018, a few weeks shy of her 103rd birthday.
She was born Nov. 2, 1915, in Brooklyn, Iowa. She was the fourth of 12 children born to Joseph Bauwens and Maria Louise Van Lancker. She married Willie Brust on Sept. 2, 1939.

She was grateful to help in any way possible: greeter, reader and Eucharistic minister since the 1960s; embroidered hundreds if not thousands of Baptismal gowns; cleaned the church quarterly, worked on the rummage sale, helped out in the parish office, and was a member of Sacred Heart’s Altar & Rosary Society since the 1950s.
She moved to San Diego in 2016 to live with her daughter. She leaves behind numerous friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be Dec. 12, at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Moline. A luncheon will follow the service in Culeman’s Hall next to the church.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sacred Heart Altar & Rosary Society candle fund, Lee Parish Center, 1608 13th Street, Moline, IL 61265.
