U.S. Army MSGT (Ret) Jack Murphy, 82, of Burnsville, died July 29, 2017 at Charles George VA Medical Center Valor Hospice.

A native of Yancey County, Mr. Murphy was born February 10, 1935 to the late Eckard and Nettie Hensley Murphy. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Randy Jack Murphy; a brother, Rev. Frank Murphy; and brother-in-law, James McKinney.

Mr. Murphy retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, and watching racing.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Margaret Ann Hitson Murphy; children, Michael Murphy, and Brenda Gail Murphy; siblings, Rev. Tommy Murphy (Jean), Ruth Murphy Silvers (Ronnie), and Lois Murphy McKinney; grandchildren, David Alan Silvers, Jamie Ellyce Silvers Hughes, Victoria Cheyenne Poteat, and Michael Karlton Murphy; great-grandchildren, Jacob Alan Silvers, Cooper Matthew Silvers, Eli Aaron Hughes, Piper Rylie Silvers, Zacharia Wade Hughes, Warren David Hughes, and Tyler Caspian Wayne Kearney.

A memorial service will be held at Riverside Baptist Church in Burnsville on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 6:00 PM.
