Colonel Richard McAllister was the founder of the town of Hanover, Pennsylvania. His headstone spells McAlister with one "L" where most everywhere else it is with double letter L's.

He was born in 1725 and grew up in Cumberland County on his parent's farm.

In 1745, he bought 217 acres from John Digges, establishing the original town of Hanover.
Hanover was also called Hickory Town after heavy tree growth or McAllister's Town. Hanover became name due to the predominantly local German inhabitants. .

When Richard McAllister passed away in 1795, Hanover's population was 500.

During his lifetime Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George and Martha Washington traveled through Hanover.
