Age 81, passed away February 5, 2007 at the home of his daughter in Saranac, MI. He was born August 9, 1924 in Sebree (Webster County) KY. He was the son of Rhoden and Mabel (Ray) Rhodes. His wife, Sophie, preceded him in death on April 5, 2006. They were married on July 11, 1942 and and 63 years together. He is survived by four children, Wayne A. (Jeannie) Rhodes of Valparaiso, IN, Alan D. Rhodes of Albion, MI, Lawrence D. Rhodes of Tucson, AZ and Cynthia O. (Robert) Livingston of Saranac, MI. He is survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grand-children, Shannon (Stjepan) Maric of Dallas, TX, Chad Rhodes of Richmond, VA, Amber (Carl) Jackson of Ionia, MI, Brett Livingston of Saranac, MI, Danielle (Alex) Maldonado of Palestine, TX, Colette (Nathan) Loudin of Hong Kong, Gabrielle Chadwell of Belton, TX, Chase Newman of Palestine, TX and Joseph and Sarah Maldonado of Palestine, TX. Two sisters-in-law also survive him, Roslynne (Ralph) Kastner of Ruidoso, NM and Jean (Fred) Leitgeb of Westland, MI; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mr. Rhodes graduated from Henry Ford Trade School in 1942. Mr. Rhodes served honorably in World War II and was promoted to the rank of Corporal in the United States Army. He was inducted on June 14, 1943 and trained in Fort Custer (Battle Creek, MI), Fort Knox (Louisville, KY), Camp Shelby (Hattiesburg, MS), Fort Jackson (Columbia, SC), and Camp Wainwright (Alberta, Canada). He served with the 781st Tank Battalion, Company D, 1st Platoon as a gunner on a M5A-1 Light Tank. His unit was assigned as part of a reconnaissance team with the 100th Infantry Division. He entered the European Theater of Action at Marseille, France on October 28, 1944. Campaign Credits include: Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe. He received the following Medals/ Decorations for service: Good Conduct, American Campaign, European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign, World War II Victory and Army of Occupation of Germany. He was discharged on November 22, 1945. He worked for the Kelsey Hayes Company for almost 45 years as a Senior Quality Assurance Representative. He enjoyed traveling with his family and researched his family genealogy for 60 years. Rev.. W. A. Rhodes will conduct funeral services at the Watson Funeral Chapel on Thursday, February 8, at 11:00 a.m. Internment with full military honors at Fort Custer on Friday, February 9, at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Rhodes officiating.
