Dorothy Alice Margaret Augusta Grosvenor was born at London on 22 August 1890. She was the second of three children born to Lord Henry George Grosvenor (11861-1914) and his first wife Dora Mina Erskine-Wemyss (1856-94). She was a paternal granddaughter of Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster (1825-99) and via her mother, a great-great-granddaughter of King William IV (1765-1837) and Dorothea Bland (1761-1816).

Dorothy married four times, her first three unions ending in divorce:

1. Albert Edward Harry Meyer Archibald Primrose, Viscount Dalmeny [later 6th Earl of Rosebery and 2nd Earl of Midlothian] (1882-1974).
2. Robert Bingham Brassey
3. Chetwode Charles Hamilton Hilton-Greene (d. 1963)
4. Richard Herbert Mack (d.1967)

Following the accession of her brother, William Grosvenor (1894-1963), to the dukedom of Westminster, Dorothy was granted the rank and style of the daughter of a duke in the peerage of the United Kingdom.
