The Honourable Henry George Grosvenor was born at London on 23 June 1861.

The infant Henry’s father was Hugh Lupus Grosvenor (1825-99), styled by courtesy, Earl Grosvenor, being the eldest son and therefore heir of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster (1795-1869).

Henry’s mother was the former Lady Constance Gertrude Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1934-80), daughter of George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland (1786-1861).

The infant Henry was the third son and fifth child born to Hugh Lupus and Constance.

Henry’s father succeeded to the marquessate of Westminster in 1869. His younger sons henceforth enjoyed the courtesy title of Lord __ rather than Honourable __ before their names. The 2nd Marquess of Westminster was created Duke of Westminster four years later. Henry’s title, and those born by his siblings, remained the same whilst their rank went up the social pecking order.

Lord Henry Grosvenor was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, a college commonly referred to as “The House”. Like many young men of his social class he did not take a degree.

Lord Henry was unsuccessful in contesting the Norwich Division of Cheshire in 1887.

Lord Henry married twice. His first wife was Dora Mina Kittina Erskine-Wemyss (1856-94), a great-granddaughter of King William IV (1765-1837) and Dorothea Bland (1761-1816). Lord and Lady Henry lived between the Grosvenor properties in Cheshire and London and Bulwich Park, Wansford, Northamptonshire. The couple would have three children:

1. Millicent Constance(1889-1944)
2. Dorothy Alice Margaret Augusta (1890-1966)
3. William, 3rd Duke of Westminster (1894-1963)

Henry and Dora’s baby son was born at six months gestation on 23 December 1894. Dora, much weakened by his birth, died as Christmas Eve passed into Christmas Day.

On 19 October 1911 Lord Henry married the widowed Rosamund Angharad Greaves, née Lloyd (1860-1941). Several years before the marriage, Rosamund had purchased Quenby Hall, a vast Jacobean house in parkland near the villages of Cold Newton and Hungarton, Leicestershire. It was the principal residence of Lord and Lady Henry Grosvenor for the three years of their union. There were no children of this second marriage though for the rest of her life Rosamund showed great devotion to her stepson, William, whose premature birth had resulted in intellectual impairment.

Lord Henry George Grosvenor died at Quenby Hall on 27 December 1914.
