WORLD WAR II∼Today we celebrate the home going of Ernest Sanford, Sr. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 30, 1925. He was the only child of Henry Sanford and Annie Ross. His parents preceded him in death as did his stepmother Aretha Banks Andrews-Sanford. and siblings Martha Andrews and Richard.
Ernest received his early childhood education in Detroit schools before transferring to the school system in Milledgeville, GA after the death of his mother. He confessed his love for Christ as a young man and was baptized at New Bethel Baptist Church under the pastor ship of Rev, C.L. Franklin. He continued to worship at New Bethel Pastor Robert Smith Jr.
Ernest enlisted in the United States Army in 1944. He wanted to become a paratrooper because he admired the uniform especially the BOOTS, but when he finished basic training was ordered to go to Fort Benning, GA. He served in Bari, Italy, World War II, 92nd Division for black troops only. He drove colonels, majors an performed guard duty. He was wounded in combat February 3rd, 1945 for which he received the Purple Heart Medal of Honor. After he received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned home to Detroit. He was employed by Ford Motor Co in June of 1967 where he assembled high performance rods for police cars before retiring due to his disability.
Dad wore fine clothing and took pride in dressing in three piece suits complete with matching shoes and hats for all occasions. He was called "booty bug" because he looked like the jitterbug-gang in the 40's that ran together robbing people. He wore zoot suits and the shoes but he was not part of the gangs. He was later given the nickname "Boot" because of how he dressed.
Dad love family and family gatherings and looked forward to his birthday party every year. He enjoyed baseball and boxing. He drove luxury Buicks, enjoyed horse racing and loves a good dice game. He loves music especially the blues and his all times favorite was the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. Dad followed her career as young child and recorded her singing in the basement of the old New Bethel Church on Hastings Street. He kept cassette tapes of her early recordings as well as sermons of Re, C.L. Franklin.
He met and married the love of his life Minnie Lee "Peaches" Williams in 1949. This union produced a large family of seventeen children. Minnie along with ten children preceded him in death, Five infants and five adults children, Taryn, Brenda, Charlie, Johnie and Michelle. Two grandsons also preceded him in death, Tijuan Kidd and James Sanford.
Dad rested comfortably under hospice care at the John F. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit among family before quietly passing away on Thursday October 10th , 2019 at 3:26 am. He was loves by all and will be greatly misses. His memory will be cherished by his loving children: Gardell (Carolyn), Arnette, Bernadette (Ronald), Kevin, Kimberly (Gregory), Ernest Jr, (Nancy) and Theresa; twenty two grand-children; twenty-seven great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Essie Williams of Atlanta, GA; a dear companion Maxine Adams, and a score of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
