Canfield Herald, Th, 1 Dec 1870
"The Canfield Herald of Dec. 1, contains a notice of the death of Mr. James Jones, one of the most estimable citizens of Mahoning County. A son of Mr. Jones, married Ellen R. Bond, daughter of Mr. Jonas Bond, late of Edinburgh, but now a resident of Canfield, where his daughter, Mrs. Jones resides. Of the deceased a correspondent of the Herald says: The friends of Mr. James Jones, of Canfield, will be pained on receiving intelligence of his death, which occurred at his residence a short distance from this village on the 16th ult. The disease was typhoid fever, aggravated by weakness of the lungs. The deceased was born, in Ellsworth township, November 14th, 1807, and resided there until year 1852, when he moved to his late residence in Canfield. In 1832 (11 Sep 1832) he married Miss Huldah Tanner, daughter of Deacon E. P. Tanner, whom, with an affectionate family, he has left to mourn his loss. About forty years ago he united with the Congregational Church of this place, in which it has at times seemed more than his meat and drink to do the will of his Father in Heaven. During the recent repairs which were made on the Congregational edifice, he was ever present encouraging with his voice and toiling until his wearied frame would positively bid him, rest. Those who are members of this church will not soon forget that spirit of activity, and go-ahead activeness which was so much evinced by this good brother. As to courteousness and affability of manner, he was not often excelled. His family deeply loved him, and all who knew him, we are compelled to believe, could not but regard him a kind, genial, warm-hearted man. Thus the Church on earth has lost an earnest laborer, and the Saints in Heaven have welcomed an Angel which will unite with them in singing sweetest praises around the Eternal throne. "Servant of God, well done ! The glorious warfare's past; The battle's fought – the race is run And thou art crowned at last! Oh, happy, happy soul !
In ecstasies of praise
Long as eternal ages roll,
Thou, seest thy Savior's face,
Redeemed from earth and pain,
Oh! When shall we ascend,
And all in Jesus' presence reign
With our translated friend !"
