US Senator. She served in the United States Senate from the state of North Carolina from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2015. She earned a B.A. degree from Florida State University in 1975 and a J.D. degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1978 and later pursued a career in both law and banking. She worked in the banking industry prior to entering politics, as a vice president of the North Carolina National Bank. In 1998, she was elected to the North Carolina State Senate and served in this legislative body for the next ten years. She decided to run, as a Democrat, for the United States Senate in 2008 against incumbent Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole and was successful in the November general election. She went on to serve one term in the Senate before losing her re-election bid to Republican Thom Tillis in 2014. After leaving office, she went on to become a resident fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics and also worked for a lobbying firm. She passed away from complications of the Powassan virus.
