Artist and writer. Chikuden Tanomura is considered the greatest painter of the Japanese Southern school of Chinese painting. He began to paint during his youth and had many exchanges with distinguished men of the arts including Sanyo Rai. He gained fame as a painter in the 1820s. Most of his great works have become important cultural assets and were painted during this period. These works include "Inagawa Shuyuzu (Boating Excursion)," "Senso Shogicho (Picture from a Boat Window)," and "Mata Mata Ichirakucho (Little Pleasures)." In addition to painting, Tanomura's talents included writing and were demonstrated in "Bungo Kokushi (History of Oita)" and an essay on drawing called "Sanchujin Jozetsu (A Talkative Man)." Renowned artists Sohei Takahashi and Kyou Hoashi are among his disciples.
