DEATH SUMMONS JULIUS GALLAND
Heart Attack Fatal to Pioneer Brewer, Baker
66 Years of Age
Born in Oregon, Came to the Palouse in 1883,
and to Spokane in 1891

After an illness of four weeks with heart trouble, Julius Galland, 66, capitalist and extensive property hold of Spokane, died at Sacred Heart hospital shortly after 6 o'clock last night. Although he had been ill for about a month, it was not until three weeks ago that he was removed from his home at the Davenport Hotel. He was under the care of Dr. Sidney S. Oppenheimer and Dr. J. T. Bird. Apparently, he had been in good health until the illness which resulted in his death.

Born February 14, 1860, in Champoeg, Marion County, Oregon, he had been a resident of Washington since 1883 and of Spokane since 1891. His parents were Solomon Galland and Adelaide (Goodman) Galland, natives of Prussia, who came to Oregon in 1860.

There were four boys in the family--Julius, Theodore, who died in 1908; Samuel, who died in 1921, and Adolph, still living.

CAME TO PALOUSE COUNTRY IN 1883
Julius Galland was educated in the public school of Oregon, taking up the study of law for railroad and corporation work under Senator Joseph N. Dolph.

A year after his admission to the bar he came to Washington, arriving on in the Palouse Country in the spring of 1883.

He took charge of a general mercantile store in Farmington and became associated with his brothers, opening a store in Palouse in the fall of 1883 under the name of Galland Brothers

They further extended their activities by establishing a store in Wallace, Idaho, in the spring of 1889, and in 1891 they closed out their holdings in Palouse and Farmington, preparatory to moving to Spokane. They established a brewery in Spokane in the fall of 1891 and disposed of their store in Wallace the same fall.

STARTED BREWERY IN 1891
In 1891, they erected a building for the Galland Burke Brewing Company, which in 1902 was consolidated with the Spokane Brewing and Malting Company, with Julius Galland as president. He remained president of the Spoakne Brewing and Malting company until his death.

In 1906 he organized the Northwest Loan and Trust Company with his brothers as associates. He was the president of the company. The Northwest Loan and Trust company later consolidated with the Spokane and Eastern Trust Company, Julius Galland remaining a stockholder with the Spokane and Eastern Trust Company until his death.

HAD EXTENSIVE PROPERTY HOLDINGS
He had large holdings in the Spokane Realty company, a subsidiary of the Spokane Brewing and Malting company, and was president of its company also. He had but recently disposed of his extensive holdings in Oregon Power companies, according to a long-standing friend and associate, Henry Boesmann. He was also a stockholder in the Centennial Mill and had extensive timber holding in Stevens county, about 8000 or 9000 acres, Mr. Boesmann said.

Mr. Galland had never married. Besides his brother, Adolph, who lives in Spokane, his survivors are his nephews, Theodore and Samuel Galland, who are now students at Harvard University.

Mr. Galland was noted for his business acumen. He leaves many friends in the city. He was a charter member of Tyrian Lodge No. 96 of the Masonic Order.

Active pallbearers for the funeral include Henry Boesman, S.L. Gates, J. A. Reubens, Dr. S. S. Openheim4er, E. Vaughn Klein and Walter Sivyer.

Honorary bearers are J. A. Schiller; Fred B. Grinnell; Louis M. Davenport; and W. J. C. Wakefield.

Tyrian Lodge will have charge of the funeral, which will be held in the Masonic Temple at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon. The body is at Smith's and Co. The Rabbi Manpas of Spoakne will officiate.
