"Rosina Ferrara was born in Anacapri, on the island of Capri in 1861. She was the daughter of Bartolomeo Ferrara. Her mother was the descendant of the 16th Century pirate, Barbarossa. Her parents were poor, yet had gaiety in their lives. Rosina had a sister who was as beautiful as she, yet was doomed to live an obscure life.

During the 1870's, Rosina was the subject for various artists who visited the Island of Capri. English artist Frank Hyde, first used Rosina as a model for his Capri paintings. Rosina was a very handsome girl with frizzled hair and nut-brown complexion of an Arab.

Rosina has been a muse to various late 19th-century painters. American expatriate painter John Singer Sargent has been captivated by Rosina's exotic appearance. At least 15 drawings, paintings and sketches of her had been produced by Mr. Sargent during his stay in Capri in 1878.

She had a child, Maria Carlotta, in 1883. Then in 1891, she married American artist George Randolph Barse in Rome. The following year, they moved to New York, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
