Miss Mary Lowe, the 20-year-old daughter of Hon. James R. Lowe, was killed in a tragic buggy accident on North Market Street in San Jose on March 30, 1887. She was riding with her friend, Miss Frost, when the horse spooked and the young ladies were thrown onto the sidewalk. Miss Frost suffered minor injuries and a gash on her head, but sadly, Mary Lowe's injuries were fatal. She was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery beside her mother.
