Miss Mary Lowe, the 20-year-old daughter of Hon. James R. Lowe, was killed in a tragic buggy accident on North Market Street in San Jose on March 30, 1887. She was riding with her friend, Miss Frost, when the horse spooked and the young ladies were thrown onto the sidewalk. Miss Frost suffered minor injuries and a gash on her head, but sadly, Mary Lowe's injuries were fatal. She was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery beside her mother. (San Jose Daily Mercury, Apr. 1, 1887; San Jose Evening News, Apr. 1 and Apr. 2, 1887.)

She was buried in the cream-colored dress that she had worn to her 20th birthday party the previous September. The dress had been a birthday gift from Mrs. Lowe [her step-mother]. Her casket bore a silver plate with the inscription, "Mary A. Lowe, died March 30, 1887, age 20 years, six months." (San Jose Herald, Apr. 2, 1887.)

The Lowe family plot is located in a lovely area of Section C, which is one of the oldest sections of the cemetery. Mary's grave is unmarked.
