Joyce Andersen Price was born on February 11, 1934, in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of Orvie and Nancy Banta Green. She was a descendant of the first settler of Warren County, John Talbot. During the Great Depression, it was customary for children born into struggling families with already many children to be brought up by relatives who wanted to help. Joyce fell into this category. Joyce was brought up by her paternal aunt and her paternal aunt’s husband, Clyde and Ora Miller, and enjoyed frequent visits and extended stays with her biological family.
Joyce was an accomplished pianist, having taken lessons through Monmouth College from the age of 5 through her late adolescence. She participated in many recitals and concerts in the auditorium of Monmouth College as a student of Gracie Peterson, a well-known professor and performer in the area.
Joyce attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.
In March of 1954, she married Donald Edwin Andersen. A few years later, they moved to the Dundee, Illinois area, as Don was hired by School District 300 as a teacher. After the tragic loss of her youngest pre-school daughter in 1967, Joyce sought employment outside the home and was hired by what was then Judson College as an administrative assistant to the Academic Dean, Dr. Edgar Boss, a founder of the university. Joyce shared her efforts on the committee to achieve Judson’s first accreditation by the North Central Association in 1975. She worked for what has become Judson University for many years, and retired as Director of Career Services in the early 2000’s. Joyce loved her position in career services and treasured the many thank you notes she received from students for whom she had helped find employment during their stay at Judson and after obtaining their degrees. She guided students in writing resumes, interview skills, and business lunch skills in addition to coordinating employment between local businesses and students of Judson.
Joyce has served the greater Dundee area as a Brownie Scout leader, District 300 Parent Teacher Association room mother, member of Delta Sigma Phi Sorority, Friends of Judson and member of Fox Valley Beaux Arts Club. She was also a member of the Illinois Small College Placement Association. During her later years she enjoyed keeping in touch with her friends, extended family members, and former colleagues through Facebook.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, five of her siblings, her youngest daughter, Barbara Joyce Andersen, her first husband, Donald Edwin Andersen, her second husband, Donald Price, and her son-in-law, Roger Dale Smith. She is survived by her brother, Gayle Russell Green of Abington, Illinois, and her three loving children. They are Chrisann Andersen Smith of Sleepy Hollow, Illinois, Pamella Andersen LaRoche of Everett, Washington, and Mark Edwin Andersen (Linda) of Woodstock, Illinois. Her children will sorely miss her wise guidance and friendship. Additionally, she is survived by two granddaughters and a grandson and many other extended relatives and friends.
Joyce was of the Presbyterian faith.
Interment will be private. A celebration of life is expected early in 2020.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Friends of Judson University.
