Leonard was a member of Glen Oaks Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, LA under the leadership of Rev. Gregory Guillory. He was a 1976 graduate of Franklin Senior High School. He later attended Southern University. He served honorably in the United States Air Force.

He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Coty Colbert of Jacksonville, FL, Leonard Joseph Bowie, Jr. of Virginia, and Gerald Bowie of Jeanerette, LA; three daughters, Leslie Guerin (Eric) of Baton Rouge, LA, Latisha White of Houston, TX and Latoria Bowie of Jeanerette, LA; his mother, Beulah Bowie-Louis his step-father, Dandy Louis of Jeanerette, LA; seven aunts, Precious Bowie Joseph (Whitney) of Reserve, LA, Patricia Bowie Magee (Howard) of Tangipahoa, LA, Virginia "Jennie" Bowie Castle, Fannie Bowie Adams of Baton Rouge, LA, Lessie Bowie Notto (Larry), Gwendolyn Bowie of Glenco, LA and Norma Jean Bowie of Glencoe, LA; five uncles, John Henry Bowie, Sr., of Franklin, LA, Isaac Bowie (Lillie), Theothilius Andrew Bowie, Sr., of Jeanerette, LA, Kenneth Alexander Bowie (Andrea) of Houston, TX and Carl Allen Bowie of St. Louis, IL; one grandchild, Jaylen Colbert of Jacksonville, FL, two godchildren, Calvin Bowie and Terell Lemmon, his godmother, Carolyn Brent, and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
