Abigail Austen was baptised on 11th March 1795 in Folkestone as Abigail Shrewsbury. Her parents were Thomas Shrewsbury (1757-1838) & Martha nee Rolfe (1771-1857). They had married on November 13th 1790 in Cheriton, Kent. Siblings to Abigail are Jane 1791-1868, Thomas 1793-1795, Thomas 1797-?, Elizabeth 1801-1877, Daniel 1805-1865 & Mary Ann 1811-1877.
On December 30th 1838, in Wye, Kent, an Abigail (Reid) married a Daniel Austen (1791-1863). Daniel had earlier married Ann Peaty in 1815 but she had passed away in 1837 in Wye. (This could be our Abigail, but I've not been able to find a marriage for Abigail Shrewsbury to anyone called Reid). Daniel & Ann had children including Daniel 1813-1880, John 1815-1870, Frances 1817-1882, Charlotte 1819-1865, Mary Ann 1822-? & Elizabeth 1825-?
The census for 1841 shows Daniel Austen 42, agricultural labourer, Abigail Austen 45 & Elizabeth Austen 15 living at Grove House, Wye, Kent.
The 1851 census shows that Daniel is now 59 & a gardener & servant born in Wye. He is living 'Near Wye Bridge' along with Abigail 54 & Martha Shrewsbury, Abigail's Mother. She is 80.
A more detailed address for the census of 1861. 'Bridge Cottage' Wye, has Daniel 69, gardener & Abigail 64 living there.
With Daniel passing away in 1863, the census for 1871 shows Abigail now a widow, aged 75. She has moved back to Folkestone & is living in Dover Street with 2 of her sisters. Mary Howes is the head of household. She is aged 62, married & an Infant School Mistress, Elizabeth Rostock is 69 & a widow. She is a retired servant.
Early in January 1874 Abigail passes away at home in Dover Street. She is aged 78. She is laid to rest on January 8th in Section 25 Plot 5149.
