Charlie Banks Sr., a resident of Baton Rouge, he departed from his earthly life on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center after a brief illness. He was 71.
Visiting at Carney & Mackey Funeral Home, 1576 Robin St., and at Greater King David Baptist Church, 222 Blount Ave., until religious service, conducted by Dr. John E. Montgomery II, pastor. Interment in Southern Memorial Gardens.
"Moon", as he was affectionately called, graduated from Southern University Laboratory School in 1957. He furthered his education at Southern University, earning a bachelor of arts degree in vocational education, a master's of arts degree in counseling and a certification in administration and supervision. His professional career began as an industrial arts teacher at Lawless Area Junior High School in New Orleans, then West High School in Jackson and finally Capitol Junior High School, Park Forest Junior High School and Istrouma Senior High School, all with the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. Most recently, he was head moderator at the Capitol Discipline Center. He leaves to mourn his passing a loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Estella Square Banks; two daughters, Chauna Banks Berry of Baton Rouge and Chalonda Banks Hollins of Baker; son and daughter-in-law, Chad Dynell Banks and Shana Peters Banks of McKinney, Texas; granddaughter, Falyn LeShay Hollins; three grandsons, Clint Audwin Berry, Chase DeShane Hollins and Justin Anthony; two sisters, Velma Banks Williams of Baton Rouge and Gladys Banks Carter of Columbia, S.C.; 11 sisters-in-law, Laura Square Lang and Bonnie Square Jackson, both of Baton Rouge, Dr. Daisy Square Beck of Denver, Beatrice Square White and Sarah Stemley Square, both of Baker, Mildred Square Matthews of Dallas, Sharolyn Square Farmer of Stone Mountain, Ga., Tamara Square Creech of Fairburn, Ga., Mary Square of Oklahoma City, Fern Square of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Michelle Square of Dacula, Ga.; eight brothers-in-law, Preston Carter of Columbia, Noah Lang Jr. of Baton Rouge, Robert L. Square and Lynell White Sr., both of Baker, David Creech of Fairburn, Willie T. Square Jr., of Oklahoma City, Arthur D. Square of Brooklyn and Percy L. Square, Esq., of Dacula; three aunts, Annie Mae Jackson and Idella Jackson, both of Baton Rouge, and Mildred Butler of Zachary; godsister, Doretha Marchand; goddaughter, Nikki Forbes; brother of the heart, Robert Earl Stevenson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and co-workers. Preceding him in death are his parents; and son, Charlie Banks Jr.
