Bartlett purchased a ridge of rock near the harbour and hired Cornish miner John Hoskins to begin construction of his tunnel around 1860. This was to provide a good deep water berth for loading & unloading his ship.

Abraham Bartlett died intestate 3 Oct 1889, aged 70 years, leaving an estate valued at $10,000. He was survived by his wife Elizabeth (Wilmot); and sons John, Henry, Samuel and William Bartlett. Son John Bartlett asked the Court for permission to administer his father's estate. Abraham was Grandfather of Captain Bob Bartlett of Arctic fame (son of William).
