Absalom Alonzo "Abb" Smith was born on March 6, 1880 in Georgia to Thomas Wright Smith and Julia Ann Cantrell.

He had seven siblings: William Erastus Smith, James Monroe Smith, John Wooten Smith, George Thomas Smith, Andrew W. Smith, Minnie E. Smith and Sarah M. A. "Mattie" Smith.

His paternal grandparents were Absalom Smith and Elizabeth Catherine Foster and his maternal grandparents were Aaron Cantrell and Temperance Brand Davis.

He married Ada Mae Herod on August 17, 1898 in Houston County, Texas.

They were blessed with nine children: Vinnie Smith Powell, Abbie Inez Smith Keahey Wade, Lessie Smith Nicholas, Mattie Vaughn Smith Mitchell, Dolly Smith, Dorothy Rose Smith Byers, Arlen Leroy Smith, Horace Dalton Smith and Alla Opal Smith Irwin.

He died on January 25, 1967 in Cherokee County, Texas. He was 86 years old.
