As many of you already know I was not able to give my dad a memorial at the time of his passing. Then when I was able & ready, COVID-19 came. And now, it's been one year ago today since my daddy went home to heaven. I'll like to share at this time his "celebration of life" I had planned with my FB family and friends. Opening Song... Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) by Chirs Tomlin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbe7OruLk8I

Good afternoon and thank you for coming. I feel honored to be able to do this for for my beloved dad and be the one to tell you his life story in a nutshell and the man I called dad for 87 years. His wings were ready... but my heart was not.

John Walter Schoenradt was born July 20, 1932 in Logansport Indiana to the parents, Carl & Margaret Schoenrdt. He was the 5th child out of 7 children. Times were hard back then (as I was always reminded often) with the lack of jobs and money. My dad quit school at the age of 16 to go to work to help his family. At 18 he enlisted in the Army for 3 years. During his time in the service he traveled a lot and served in the Koren War. He didn't re-enlisted after he served his country, instead moved back home, here in Loganssort, Indiana.

Shortly after returning home his best buddy set him up on a blind date. This young girl was only 16 years old and would later become my mom. Her name was Ada Marie Farmer and she was from Monticello, Indiana. Dad fell in love with her and she was swept off her feet with him. She quit school to marry him. They were married on August 7th 1954. They didn't waste any time with starting a family.. but then again there was no birth control use either. He became a father to a son, Rickard Dean on April 11, 1955 and then another son, Daniel Walter on July 8, 1956. On September 9, 1957 he had a daughter... me. My dad was only 25 years old and had a wife and three babies. It wasn't easy supporting a wife and three children, but he did his best. He was involved in Boy Scouts of America as a Den Leader while my brothers were in scouts. He went on many camping trips with them also. He loved to fish, so he took us kids and mom fishing often. Of course I was spoiled because I wouldn't touch a worm or fish, so my daddy would bait my hook for me and take off the fish when I caught one. My brothers thought I got away with everything, but, that wasn't the complete truth... I just was more charming. Dad enjoyed going rabbit and squirrel hunting also. And, when it was Spring, he would go out into the woods and look for wild mushrooms. We were so happy when he came home with a bag full. YUMMY!!!!

My memories I have with Thanksgiving & Christmas celebrations on my mom's side of the family were awesome. When it came to playing Eurcher, my Aunts and Uncles were very competitive. The boys cousins would play together while the girl cousins played together. I truly believe the adults were louder than us kids. You would hear sayings like... "cut his throat" or "I have a dog from every city". These are just two examples because there are so many. It was just part of playing cards in the Schoenradt, Farmer, Schroeder & Meyer families. My dad had a sharp mind when playing Eurcher, but, so did my Grandpa Farmer and Uncle Herman. In fact... I would say Uncle Herman was the "King of Eurcher" as far as I'm concerned. Fond Memories!!

July 23rd 1976 dad became a Grandpa. John Daniel came into his world and he was a proud Grandpa. September 23rd 1978 he became grandpa for the second time. Rickard Dean II. On April 17th 1979 another grandson entered his life and his name is Jason Ryan. AKA... Rhino. A nickname my dad gave him. On January 21, 1986 he finally had a granddaughter, Eva Marie. And, lastly his 4th grandson, Jordan Nathaniel on December 13, 1988.

My dad worked at Myers Spring Company for many years and then RCA in Monticello until they closed their doors back in December of 1982. He found himself at the age of 50+ without a job. Another challenge for him in life was to find a full time job with benefits at his age. Thank goodness for Mr. Myers, who always loved my dad, he gave him a job back at Myers Spring Company as a supervisor. Dad retired in 1994 at 62 years old from Myers Spring Company, mainly because mom told him if he didn't retire, she was moving to Florida without him. She was ready to leave Indiana for Florida living because all her grandchildren lived there. Of course dad didn't really want to be left out, so he retired & followed. My dad loved seeing and being around his children, grandsons and granddaughter very much, but living year round in the hot S.W.Florida didn't come instantly, But, slowly he came around. Unfortunately, less than two years after moving to Florida his life took a huge hit with the news of Rick & Dan. Both were diagnosed two days apart with cancer. Dan, who was the only one living in Indiana at the time, moved down to Florida in July of 1996 to be with us for his last 6 months of life. As awful as it was losing a child, also turned into something beautiful. After Dan's funeral service was over, my dad broke down and accepted our Lord as his Savior. This was the day my dad's name was written in the book of life. He was going to need our Savior (like all of us do) for strength to endure the loss of another son the following year... Rick passed in February of 1998

May 21,1998 he became a Great Grandpa to Ashley Nicole. Although he adored the newest member of the family he needed to keep himself busy in order to help cope with the loss of two sons. To help heal his broken heart and keep his mind busy he found a part time job working at Publix. For those Hoosiers who might not know, Publix is a main grocery chain in the south.

November 29th 2000, Joseph Daniel, became his second Great Grandson.
Soon afterwards four more Great Grandchildren came into the family...Ashton Ryan on February 12, 2007 Taryn Brynn on November 20, 2009 Havanna Katelyn on January 26, 2010
Jack Hayden on December 7, 2011

Dad was very active in the 55+ community where he and mom lived. He was the president of dart ball... yes, I said dart ball. Throwing darts while using the board as a baseball field. He joined a bowling ball league & he loved riding his bike in their community daily and making his rounds chatting with the neighbors. Mom once told me, "he knows everyone!!!". Friday nights were BINGO nights and he was happy as a clam if he won any money. Speaking of money... he loved to scratch off tickets and was hoping to hit the BIG ONE... but it wasn't meant to be.

On January 26th 2012 he lost the love of his life. He came home on his lunch break from work and found my mom on the floor. She had passed away from a massive heart attack. They had been married for 58 years. Two months after my mom's passing another Great Grandson arrived.March 13, 2012, Jaden Scott came into our world. Dad continued to work for one more year after the passing of my mom . At the young age of 80 years old he said "goodbye" to Publix after serving 17 years with them.

After living in Florida for 19 years it was time to head back home to Indiana... especially since my hubby & I had already decided we were moving to Indiana. My husband and I wanted to live where our grandchildren were in order to be part of their young lives. Once again dad found himself in the same situation except it was just the reverse this time... he would be going north instead of south. And, he didn't seem as hesitant this time around. So, on May 28, 2013 we all made it safely to Indiana. God blessed my husband and I with a home that was large enough for my dad and our youngest son to continue to live with us. We liked the location the most, by the woods. And, the first thing I remember my dad doing was going out into the woods looking for mushrooms. He had found himself back home in Indiana where he longed to be, but learned many of his friends had already passed. He found contentment everyday by simply getting out for drives, going to the dollar store, grocery store, etc. He always came home with scratch off tickets. He would sit outside on the porch and scratch away. I always knew when he had a winner... because he would call out my name, "Sis" "I'm going back to town" He enjoyed going and watching his great grandsons play baseball during the Spring & Summer... this was priceless to him. His routine was pretty much the same for 7 1/2 years. My dad and I had our routine time together also. I would fix his main meal around 2:00pm and we'd eat together. Monday thru Friday evenings we'd watch Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy. Every Wednesday night he would stay up one hour later just to watch Survivor with me. We both got hooked on this crazy show.

Two more Great Grandchildren would enter into Dad's life while living in Indiana and they were:
Heidi Adalyn on October 15, 2014 & Lydia Jane on August 30, 2017 (who was the only great grandchild he didn't get to meet in person)

On August 4, 2019 my dad had a stroke. Fortunately it was a mild stroke. He was recovering nicely, but he knew he wouldn't be able to come back home with me. My hands were already full with taking care of Ray who had just gotten out of the hospital from open heart surgery and his mild stroke. On August 9, 2019 I signed the papers to admit my dad into the VA home in Lafayette, Indiana. This weighed heavy & broke my heart to do this. I was told to give it time and it would get better. Of course no one has a crystal ball. My dad's health started going down rapidly and I could see his unhappiness and depression... which made it even harder on both of us.

With 71/2 years living under one roof with my dad, I had the privilege of getting to know the real John Schoenradt. Some days were good while others were not so good,... just like in any family. There were times he would drive me crazy, for example... going in and out of the house, just like a child. His attitude needed adjustment from time to time and the days of being negative and a grumpy old man were hard to handle. But, no matter how bad some days were, I can now look back and say "I'm so thankful for the time I had with him."

Dad was blessed with good health, family that loved him and a long life. After finding out he was bleeding internally, we both knew his days on earth would soon be over. I still recall the night we arrived back to the VA after being in the hospital for 2 days. It was around 8:30-9:00pm Thursday night and Tom Schoenradt was there waiting for us. I'd like to say "thank you" to Tom & Noemi for taking the time out of their busy lives to visit my dad several times while at the VA. Also thank you to my sons, daughter in law, grandchildren, Aunt Suzy & Eddy, Mick & Mike for dropping by to visit him. He loved all of you.

There's one more thing I'd like to share with all of you. A few days before his passing my dad reached his hand out to hold a nurse's hand and with a smile he said to her "I am going home" Her reply was "that's nice John" in such the sweetest voice. To hear him say this to her, took the wind out of my sail. It was bittersweet. This image of him will always be in my heart. I know "going home" for a Christian is the greatest gift of all... but for those of us left behind it hurts. It's the price we pay for loving someone. Time to play song... Please let's not forget to mention that Grandpa got to see his Cubs's win a World Series, the love of cookies ( had cookies every night) and how much he loved watching nature from his chair by the window or outside on the swing, his cigars & beer. He said to me... "darn... I didn't get to smoke my big cigar or have my last beer." Also I want to have a tree of life with hanging pictures of family. Closing song... Please let's drive to Spencer Park to the river for the military honors & balloon releasing. "It's not good-bye... it's until I see you again"
