Early in his life a teacher, he became a Baptist minister, but because of his zealous stand against the Missouri Compromise, he was forced to leave his church. In 1861, President Lincoln appointed him U.S. Marshal for Southern Illinois. Following the war, he was for many years the managing editor of the Illinois State Journal.
