Experts working at a property near Frankford, Sussex Countythe property, which is south of Bear Trap Dunes on Central Avenue , found the headstone bearing the name “C.S. Hall” and the details “Co. K, 32nd U.S.C.T.” This refers to Company K of the 32nd U.S. Colored Troops.

Pvt. Charles Hall, enlisted in Philadelphia at the age of 22. Hall’s unit served throughout South Carolina and participated in the Battle of Honey Hill and the occupation of Charleston. However, Hall’s service in the unit lasted just six months. He was discharged in September 1864 for disability from the General Hospital in Philadelphia.
The archaeologists found C.S. Hall’s headstone half a foot underground.
The 32nd Regiment of the United States Colored Infantry was organized at Camp William Penn in Philadelphia between Feb. 7 to March 7, 1864. The regiment was ordered to Hilton Head, S.C., the following month and remained there until June 1864, before moving to Morris Island, S.C., where it participated in operations against Charleston. Later that year, the Regiment took part in the Expedition to Boyd’s Neck and the Battle of Honey Hill. In 1865, the 32nd Regiment also participated in the occupation of Charleston.
The unit lost 150 soldiers during the Civil War – two officers and 35 enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded and 113 enlisted men died from disease.
