Although his Death Certificate has been *altered to state date of birth as 1837, I know that to be incorrect. The original date inscribed on this record 1833, is found on family documents and military records as well as his tombstone. The date of 1833 is further supported by the Death Certificate stating his age at time of death as 86.

Silas was the son of Justice Of The Peace Joseph Baker b. Virginia and Catharine Barrier b. Kentucky; husband of Minerva Jane Coffee, married April 16, 1853 in Wayne County, Kentucky; father of Perlitha (aka Telilitha) born 1854; husband of second wife, Susannah Dobbs, married August 30 1866 Wayne County, Kentucky; father of Reverend George Erwin Baker Sr., my great grandfather, born 1867 and John Joseph "JJ" Baker, born 1870.

Silas served as a Union Army soldier in the 12th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry; wounded at the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee and found on the rolls of Andersonville Prison, where his younger brother Isaac died at the age of 16. Silas returned from the war.

The year of his death, Silas was living with his son John Joseph and wife Mattie Corder and their children, on the Baker farm in Somerset, Kentucky; eighty six years of age and a widower, Silas was found dead in his bed of heart disease. He is buried in the Baker Family Cemetery in Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky.

Silas owned the Baker Scales Company in Tennessee near the Kentucky border (Jellico TN/Whitley KY meet on the Main Street of Jellico) I have the original brass seal of this company. Silas' son the Reverend George E. Baker Sr. married Andrew " AJ " Smith's daughter Emily, of the founding family of what was originally known as Smithburg, now called Jellico, Tennessee.
