Mary was baptised by her father Abel Kershaw of Blind Lane on Christmas Day of 1790 at Sowerby.
Mary next makes an appearance in the registers when she baptises her own daughter Harriot Kershaw on the 13 Mar 1814 at the Heptonstall Ebeneezer Baptist church. Her address is recorded as Brearly but no father is recorded at this time for Harriot.
Instead a Bastardy order dated 3 Mar 1814 does name Daniel Sharpe, a weaver of Midgely.
No marriage can be found for Daniel and Mary. It's highly likely none took place.
Mary next appears in the records with her second Bastardy Examination (21 Feb 1818). This time for a son born in 1817 who's putative father was named as William Wheelhouse of Wadsworth a Wheelwright.
William did however make an honest woman of her eventually. Marrying her by licence on Christmas Day 1820.
The illegitimate son was named William Kershaw Wheelhouse and he was baptised like his siblings at the Heptonstall Ebenezer Particular Baptist Church. The registers record he was born 30 Dec 1817 at Higgin Chamber. His younger, legitimate sister Martha Sarah, was baptised on the same day her date of birth was 7 Sep 1823 this time at Hebdenbridge.
Mary and husband William were to have two more children. Samuel, born in 1825 but sadly died 2 and half years later.
Their youngest Abraham was born in 1829.
The descendants of Harriet, William, Martha and Abraham (and there are a lot of them) all share DNA. So there is no question that Mary Kershaw is indeed the mother of all four.
The 41 and and 51 census has Mary and William living at Garden Square with their children.
But after her husband died in 56 she moved in with her daughter Martha and son in law Hague Moss at 2 Union St where she died a year later of heart disease.
She was buried at Heptonstall with her husband and their grandson Ingham (another illegitimate child who's parents later married) the son of William Kershaw and Mary Crabtree who died before his first birthday.
