He married the former Maxine Fleming on July 8, 1947 who survives him. They were the parents of five children; James D. III, John Bl, Jeffrey C., Jill Ann an Jan Ellen, the last of whom having preceded him in death.
For a quarter of a century J.D. served the Citizens of Buckhannon, Upshur County and West Virginia with honor, dedication and distinction: First, as Mayor of the City of Buckhannon, then as a senator from the Fifteenth Senatorial District, having been appointed in 1970 and elected in 1972 and reelected in 1976, and subsequently, was appointed Executive Secretary of the West Virginia Public Retirement System, a position he held until his death on September 22, 1986.
The City of Buckhannon enjoyed prosperity, including new industry, paved streets, water and sewer systems and the first city building owned by the city during his 14-year tenure as mayor.
He was the owner of the Bicentennial Motel and other business enterprises. He was a member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, K of P, LOOM, BPOE, Lions Club, VFW, American Legion, U.C.T., Oak Honorary, and the Buckhannon Chamber of Commerce. He was also a director of the Adrian-Buckhannon Bank. He passed due to a massive heart attack. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon.
