Inventor of Water Polo. He was a late 19th-century British journalist, a Scottish swimming instructor and coach, a contributor to the scientific techniques behind competitive swimming, and originator of the game of water polo. Born in London to Scottish parents, he drew up rules for a game in 1877, which he called "aquatic football." In 1885, this game was recognized by The Swimming Association of Great Britain and is now known as water polo. In 1883, he published "The Swimming Instructor." which was one of the first books to describe stroke efficiency, training, racing turns, and water safety. In 1891, he published a series of newspaper articles on lifesaving drills. These methods were later published in a handbook and in recognition of this he was elected the first Life Governor of The Royal Lifesaving Society.
