Harold, was born in Pendleton, Oregon Sept. 9, 1928. He was the first child of Marjorie Grace ( McMonies) and Harold V. Koontz Sr. His parents called him Junior, which as he got older he did not care for. They moved from Pendleton to Portland, Oregon sometime in 1930. And then to Seattle, Washington in 1931, where Harold's father worked ( FBS Operator ). Hal's Brother, Roger Daniel, was born in Seattle, Wa. April 12, 1932.
Sometime around 1940 the family moved to Salem, Oregon, where Harold attended school. He Graduated from Salem High School in 1946. Harold enlisted in the Army right after high school in Sept. 1946. He was stationed in Adak, Alaska, where he was a Topographical Draftsman. Tech 4. He was discharged in Feb 1948. One of his hobbies was photography. His father H.V. Koontz Sr. was also into Photography, and is probably where he got interested.
After the Army, Harold then enrolled in Oregon State College ( now OSU ), in Corvallis, Oregon where he received a degree in plant physiology in June 1952. In the summer of 1950, Hal met Shirley Sadler through a mutual friend, and they were married Dec. 23rd 1950. In the summer of 1952 Hal and Shirley moved to Pullman, Washington where Hal was going for his PhD at Washington State College. Their 1st child, Malia was born in Aug. 1954. He then graduated in 1957. The family moved to California in Nov 1957, where Harold got a job at the Agronomy Dept. at U.C. Davis.
Hal and Shirley's 2nd daughter was born in Feb. 1958, they named her Lisa. Unfortunately the marriage ended the next year 1959. In 1960-61, Hal had a job as a Biological Scientist, at Hanford Atomic Products Operation, in Washington. In 1961 he got the job as a Assistant Professor, at the University of Connecticut. In 1966 he became the Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut. In 1968-69 his Assignment was with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Republic of China, National Taiwan University and Academy of Science. Where he and Roberta lived for a year, while he taught on an exchange program.
Hal met Roberta E. Foote in 1964 and they were married Jun 25, 1965. They bought a place on a lake Wamgumbaug, where they remodeled and made many improvements on their home over the years. Including digging a basement by hand, where Hal put his darkroom.
In 1986-89 Harold spent part of his summers at Kennedy Space Center, working on a project to grow plants in outer space, (extraterrestrial crop production ).
He also co-authored many articles that were published over the years about plant related topics.
He retired May 31, 1989.
Hal and Roberta moved to Florida soon after he retired. They enjoyed traveling and made many friends over the years. Roberta passed away in May 2016, and Hal passed in April of the following year, at age 88.
