The body of 10-month-old Daniel Oney was first interred in Lebanon Cemetery, an African-American cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, established in 1849. It was one of only two private African-American cemeteries in Philadelphia at the time. Lebanon Cemetery was condemned in 1899 and closed in 1903, the bodies then being reinterred in Eden Cemetery. (The former location of Lebanon Cemetery is now the street corner of 19th Street and Snyder Avenue in South Philadelphia.)

Daniel had an older brother, George P. Oney, born in 1872. Daniel's parents were Daniel B. Oney, a sailor, (1838-circa 1904), and Charlotte E. Oney, born in 1845. His grandparents were Daniel R. Oney, also a sailor, and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Oney.
