Orson Bartlett was born in 1830 in LeRay, New York (father's census record) to Johnathan and Syrena Bartlett. Orson helped out at the farm after his father died. He lived with his mom Syrena and sister Lucinda in Theresa, New York according to the 1850 census (sister Almira not mentioned).

On the NY State census record, Orson lived with his mom and siblings, then purchased land in Theresa in March 1855. See copy of deed on Family Search in the memories section.

He moved to Kansas in 1859. Orson joined Civil War on May 28, 1861, and fought for the Union side while serving in the 1st Regiment (colored), Kansas Infantry, then it was reorganized to the 79th USCT. Orson started off as a Private, was promoted to Corporal and ended up a Sergeant on September 1, 1861.

Orson married Huldah Holcombe in 1868. The couple had two children: Eva and Earle Bartlett. Orson died in Kansas on October 2, 1873. He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte County in Kansas.
