Anthony "Tony" Armetta, 89, of Sykesville, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011. Born Nov. 9, 1921, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Stefanina and Joseph Armetta. He was the husband of Bernice T. Armetta, his wife of 66 years. He served in the Army during World War II, first on the Alcan Highway and later as a guard at a POW Camp in Douglas, Wyo., where he met and married his wife. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Baltimore and drove a dry cleaning truck for Needalman Cleaners. He then went to Social Security where he did painting and worked as a locksmith. He retired in 1987. He enjoyed the outdoors and feeding the birds. Playing cards was his favorite pastime. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Michael T. Armetta, of Finksburg; many nieces and nephews; and friends Gary, Anne-Marie and Lera Cordner. He was predeceased by a daughter, Suzanne Armetta; and by siblings Roy, Samuel, James, Jack and Helen Armetta, and Rita DelPrete. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
