Joseph Churchill Sly was born in Leeds Co., Ontario, the son of John Sly and Hannah Churchill. In 1849 the Sly family moved to Wisconsin, settling in Adams Co.. Joseph Sly enlisted Sept. 5, 1861 in the 10th Regt. Infantry Wisconsin and was discharged April 14, 1862 due to disability. Joseph homesteaded with his brothers in Dunn Co. and there he married Elizabeth Amelia Coyle in 1872 with whom he had eleven children.
About 1894 Joseph C. Sly and family moved to Washington state.
