John T. Sly was born in Addison County, Vermont in 1798, the fourth child of John Sly and Hannah Tibbits; when he was a child his parents removed to Upper Canada. In 1828 he married Hannah Churchill, daughter of Joseph and Abigail Churchill.
In 1849 John, Hannah and their eight children moved to Wisconsin, settling in Plainsville, Dell Prairie Twp., Adams Co. In 1875 the family moved to Dunn Co. in northern Wisconsin where they received land grants.
