Major League Baseball Player, For twelve seasons (1948 to 1950 and 1953 to 1961), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves, New York/ San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins. Born John August Antonelli, he attended Jefferson High School where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He briefly attended Bowling Green State University, prior to being signed by the Boston Braves as an amateur free agent in 1948. He made his Major League debut on July 4, 1948 and pitched in four games that year. His career was interrupted while he served for two years with the United States Army during the Korean War. After he was acquired by the Giants, he produced a career high 21 wins with a league leading 2.30 ERA and experienced a world championship with New York in 1954. During the 1954 World Series, he pitched in 10 innings and recorded a win against the Cleveland Indians. During the course of his career, he achieved all star status six-times. In 377 career regular season games, he compiled a 126 win, 110 loss record with a 3.34 lifetime ERA in 1,992 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he worked for a tire company.
