Was One of City's Earlier Residents
Richard Griffith, 2010 Laurel Street, died Sunday night following a long illness. Eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Griffith, and a namesake of his grandfather, General Richard Griffith of the Confederate States Army, he was born at Clearfield Plantation, now a part of the city of Jackson. His early years were spent at the plantation home of his grandfather and in Jackson. As a youth, Mr. Griffith moved to Vicksburg with his family. He was educated at Mississippi College, Virginia Military Institute, and West Point. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Griffith was married to Miss Maggie Lee Enochs, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. C. Enochs of the well known Enochs family of Mississippi. For many years he was the vice president of the First National Bank and Trust Co. of Vicksburg. Later he moved to Oklahoma City, where he resided with his wife and daughter, Rosalind Griffith.
In 1931, Mr. Griffith returned to Jackson, where the family has since lived. He was loved by many for his unselfish spirit, loyalty to friends gentle sense of humor, and genial and courtly manner.
Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters, B. W. Griffith of Tulsa. David C. Griffith of Pass Christian, Mrs. Dora C. Beers of Dallas, Mrs. Adna G. Wilde and Mrs. Rondo A. Westbrook of Jackson. Fifteen nieces and nephews and twentyfive grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in the Wright and Ferguson Chapel at 4 p. m. Tuesday conducted by Dr. W. D. Hudgins. Pallbearers will be Percy Clifton, E. G. Flowers. Jr., T. D. Davis, H. Cliff Wilson, Merle Mann, and Benjamin H. Whitfield. Honorary pallbearers will be W. W. Griffith Beers of Yazoo City, Dr. I. C. Knox and Steve Treanor of Vicksburg, Eugene Enochs of Natchez. Dr. Boyd Edwards, Dr. George Harvey, Dr. A. Gayden Ward, Albert Drake, Ben F. Whitfield. Russell Patterson, W. P. Bridges, Dr. Adna G. Wilde, Richard Stockett and Rondo A. Westbrook all of Jackson. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
