Leonidas Luther Obituary in the La Monte Record, April 11, 1941
Leonidas Luther, former resident of this city, died Sunday, April 6, 1941 at Landenbury, Pennsylvania, where he had made his home during the past four years.
Born in Lake City Florida, January 11, 1862, the deceased went west at an early age and settled in La Monte, MO where he published the [La Monte] Record until 1901. He married the late Lucinda Kaziah Mitchell Luther here. He served as clerk in the Missouri Legislature beginning in 1896 for two terms, and was instrumental in the promotion of and the establishment of the Missouri State Fair at Sedalia during the governorship of the late Lon V. Stephens.
Mr. Luther served as postmaster and took an active part in politics while residing here.
He moved with his family to Colorado, living first in Pueblo, then Denver and later in Grand Junction. He was interested in coal mining and its retail distribution. He was one of the first donators when the University of Florida was established.
His fraternal orders consisted of membership in the Knight's of Pythias and the Masonic order in which he was a Shriner and a Knight Templar. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving [children] are Mrs. William B. Hutton and Mrs. Mary Jeffers of Los Angeles, Mrs. Harley L. Ward of Wilnette, Ill., Mrs. William A Armstrong of Philadelphia, Mitchell Luther, Manhasset, Long Island, a sister Mrs. Margarete Foote of Bolivar Tennessee seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held in Landenburg, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, April 9, 1941.
Graveside services were held at the cemetery here Thursday afternoon, the Reverend S. A. Maxey, who officiated at Mrs. Luther's burial, conducting the services.
Pallbearers were J. C. Connor and W. D. Agee, Sedalia; Dr. W. E. Walker, C. E. Terry, I. A. Cross and Hugh M. Price.
