Dorothy Lucille Cunningham Abernathy, of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, January 23, 2010, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born March 26, 1921, daughter of the late John Aldridge Cunningham (1887–1959) and Cordia Clementine Hill Cunningham (1890–1977); wife of the late George Franklin Abernathy.

A graduate of Spartanburg High School, received her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at Winthrop College, and her Master's in Teaching at Teacher's College, Columbia University, in New York, NY.

A retired kindergarten and first-grade school teacher, a long-time member of Cudd Memorial Baptist Church, and a member of the Homemaker's Class.

Survivors include her daughters, Jane Dickerson (Jeff) and Mary Timmons (Buddy); grandchildren, Drew, Paige, and Chase Timmons, and Allan Dickerson (Crystal); great-grandchildren, Nathan and Cary.

Predeceased by brothers, Wallace Cunningham and Walter Cunningham.

Visitation was held from 11:00-1:00 pm, Monday, January 25, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Private graveside services were conducted by the Rev. Danny Garrett.

Memorials could be made to Cudd Memorial Baptist Church for the Annie Armstrong Easter Mission Offering, Spartanburg, SC; Spartanburg Regional Foundation, Lifeline Fund, Spartanburg, SC; or to the charity of one's choice.
