Herschel A. Cook, 88, of North Vernon, passed away at 9:11 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2016, at his residence.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. The Rev. James Radford will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Born April 23, 1928, in Dupont, Mr. Cook was the son of Benjamin H. and Helen (Richardson) Cook. He married Reta Mae Lyle on July 18, 1950, and she preceded him in death on February 4, 2014.

Herschel worked for 29 years for the State Highway Department. He was a member and pianist at Second United Methodist Church, and he enjoyed fishing, hunting and trading. His nephew, Robert Anderson, Jr., even nicknamed him Mr. Haney, after the character on Green Acres.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Ron) Norris and Kathy (Chris) Guess, both of North Vernon; brother, William Cook of Seymour; four grandsons, Eric (Sarah), Jaye (Deana), Ryan (Nicole), and Julian (Cynthia); and seven great-grandchildren, Noah, Jaiden, Olivia, Hyatt, Tiffany, Jackson and Lillian Grace.

In addition to his parents and wife, Reta, Mr. Cook was preceded in death by three brothers, Clem, Benjamin, and Paul "Bun" Cook; and five sisters, Sarah Anderson, Frances Crowder, Genevieve York, Katherine Truman and Betty Brooks.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of Jennings County.
