Obituary:

Ruth Mason Lewis, last child of COGIC founder, dies at 95 September 16,1920-November 28,2015

In a gesture that is entirely fitting, R.S. Lewis and Sons will handle the funeral services of Ruth Mason Lewis. That’s because the mortuary at 374 Vance has been her home for more than 65 years, ever since she married Robert Lewis Jr. in 1948. After her husband died in 2011, Mrs. Lewis continued living upstairs at the funeral home until her death early Saturday morning. She was 95.“It’s just been a good living,” Mother Lewis told The Commercial Appeal in 2014 on the occasion of the funeral home’s 100-year anniversary, “a good life.”

Mother. Lewis was also the last surviving child of Church of God in Christ founder Charles Mason. Mason founded COGIC in 1907 in Memphis and led the denomination until his death in 1961. COGIC remains headquartered in Memphis. COGIC Presiding Bishop Charles Blake released a statement after her death: (She) was a treasure to the Church of God in Christ. Her legacy as an incredible woman in the church will always be honored and remembered.”

One of Mother. Lewis’ worst days at the funeral home came on April 4, 1968, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot just a few blocks away. Not many people knew it that night, but King’s body was brought to R.S. Lewis and Sons for embalming and repair. The next morning, thousands came to pay their respects, Mrs. Lewis recalled in her interview with the newspaper last year. People were lined up all the way down by 7 a.m. to view him,” she said. Visitation for Mother Lewis will be from noon until 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at Pentecostal Temple COGIC, 229 S. Danny Thomas. Services will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 8 at the same church. Interment: Elmwood Cemetery.
