For eight seasons (1982 to 1985 and 1986 to 1991), he played at the center position in the National Basketball Association with the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, Kansas City Kings, Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic. Born Mark Robert McNamara, he attended Del Mar High School in California, before playing collegiate basketball at Santa Clara and later California. Selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 22nd pick during the 1st round of the 1982 NBA Draft, he totaled 270 career regular season games. McNamara experienced an NBA Championship with the 1982-1983 Philadelphia 76ers as he backed up Moses Malone at the center position. In addition to the NBA, McNamara played professionally in Europe. After retiring as a player, he became a high school basketball coach in Alaska. He died from heart related issues.
