Alexander Mosby Gwin was the brother of Senator (of California) William McKendress Gwin. He owned Brunswick Plantation; it was located along the Mississippi River in Issaquena County, Mississippi. After the death of his father, Rev. James Gwin, his mother Mary Adair McAdams Gwin lived with Alexander and his family at Brunswick Plantation, and she died there. Alexander M. Gwin died as a result of a drowning accident in the Mississippi River; he was returning to Brunswick Plantation after hunting.
