ROLAND C. GEERDTS
(1925 - 2012)

Roland C. Geerdts, age 87, a Manitowoc resident, died on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at his home.

Roland was born on February 20, 1925 in Two Creeks, where he lived until retiring in Manitowoc in 1990. He was the son of the late William and Lillian (Zierzow) Geerdts and was baptized at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Two Creeks. Roland attended the Twin Elder School in Two Creeks and graduated from Two Rivers High School with the class of 1942. On September 17, 1947, he married Marion Tangen. He worked in Illinois as a carpenter, but returned to Two Rivers to work at Hamilton Manufacturing Company. In 1952, they built their home on the family farm in Two Creeks and he bought the farm in 1958.
Roland has been a member of the Two Creeks Volunteer Fire Department and also served on the council of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Roland, also known as "Oop" began pitching for the Two Creeks softball team at the age of 14 and later pitched with the Tisch Mills Team. He bowled for many years in Mishicot. In later years, he enjoyed cross-country skiing, some golf, bike riding, tennis, and swimming. They had been members of the YMCA for 31 years, and now enjoyed their daily visits to Holy Family’s Wellness Center’s spa.
As a couple, Roland and Marion made many friends through their love of dancing. They were members of the "Happy Hoppers" and in recent years enjoyed their membership at the Manitowoc Senior Center where they continued dancing most Wednesday mornings to their favorite music of the "Mystic Mood" band!
Since Marion’s parents retired to Englewood, Florida in 1970, they became regular visitors to Florida. Upon retiring, they purchased the home in Florida. They enjoyed traveling. Special times were when they took his father-in-law back to his native Norway to visit their Norwegian family, who, also, came to visit our family.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Marion; a son: Roland Bruce (Carol) Geerdts of Melnik; two daughters: Sally (Mike) Paral of Bellevue, and June (Alan) Obry of Manitowoc; five grandchildren: Bobbi Jo Pekarek, Adam Geerdts, Brianna & Nicholas Obry and Matt (Jennifer) Paral; and three great grandchildren: Kendra and Miley Pekarek and Chase Paral.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law: Gertrude & Frederick Saubert; his sister and brother-in-law: Esther and Thomas Krizizke; his niece: Lou Ann Saubert; and his in-laws: Carl and Martha Tangen.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2012 at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Service will be the Rev. Robert Kujawski and Rev. Stephen Melso with burial at Mach Cemetery, town of Mishicot.
