Don was born on March 10, 1944 in Madison and grew up in small neighborhood called Skunk Hollow where he was raised by his father and stepmother Curtis "Pepper" and Alice Adams and their extended families.
Don was a man of very humble beginnings but lived a very a rich and full life filled with hunting, fishing and just the great outdoors in general.
Don graduated from Madison West High School where he ran track and was an avid softball player known as "Ducky" by his teammates.
After serving js country in Viet Nam Don returned home to marry his high school sweetheart Judy M Borge on December 10, 1966
Don joined the fire department in 1968 after returning from Vietnam and Okinawa as a United States Marine. Known as Grizzly Adams by his Madison firefighter coworkers Don started is career at old station number 6 on Park St then moving to fire station number 11 at Truax Air Field and on to the new main station (number 1) build in downtown Madison, Don was then moved to a new station built on the west side of Madison (Raymond Rd) fire station number 7 when he finished out his career and retired from .
Don had a huge love of animals inherited from his Dad - raising raccoons, fox, skunks and hunting dogs, he and his father were avid coon hunters and had many stories to tell of their exploits in the woods.
Don was a huge prankster and loved telling stories leaving all in laughter. Was actively involved in his daughters and grandchildren's lives and spent time teaching them about the out of doors and its wonders. Don was a little rough around the edges but had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back.
Don is survived by;
Daughters: Mary Sue Slifer of Hustisford, Wi, Rebecca (Ryan) Poquette of Eau Claire, WI and Alison (Matt) Benson of LaFarge, WI;
Grandchildren: Kenyon Slifer, Karalynn, Lily and Ellajean Poquette and Ryley, Amelia and Dawson Benson
Siblings: Mary Jane (Ron) Melvin, Beverly (Jim) Mosel, Cathi (Bob) Fischer, Bob (Rose) Cooper, Marian Roberts, Sharon Huffman and Carol Moran, and hundreds of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his loving wife of 36 years Judy, two infant sons Curtis Joseph and James, his parents: Curtis Joseph "Pepper" and Alice Emma "Orvis" Adams and Fern (Normington) Grosskrueger and Hank Grosskrueger, infant granddaughter Victoria Hunt and siblings: Grover Adams, Kenneth Adams, Robert Adams, Margaret "Adams" Normington, Betty "Adams" Stanford/Hurst, Wauneta "Adams" Gray/Peck, Dorothy "Adams" Friede, Janet "Cooper" Melvin, Jack Cooper and Jerry Cooper
Do to the Covid19 (infectious decease) a public funeral could not be held, it was a private visitation with immediate family and siblings only.
Don was laid to rest next to Judy on May 6, 2020 in Bear Creek Cemetery, LaFarge, WI with full military honors, family was lead in prayer by Bonita Dorschied
Flags were flown at half staff on May 6, 2020 at all Madison Fire Stations in honor of Don C. Adams
