Elmer Hansmann, age 84 of George, IA, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in George, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday March 25th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in George, IA with Rev. Tony Metz, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 24th from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Elmer Hansmann was born May 29, 1924, at Milbank, SD, the son of Ludwig and Lena (Stark) Hansmann. He was raised on a farm near George, Iowa and attended country school. Elmer was united in marriage on July 21, 1944 to Lila Wibben at the Zion Presbyterian Church north of George, IA. Shortly there after, he entered the U.S. Army on February 20, 1945, serving with the 29th Engineers in the Philippine Islands as a cook, and received his honorable discharge on October 30, 1946. He returned home to his wife, Lila and the couple lived and farmed near George, IA. Elmer and Lila were blessed with three children, Judy, Dennis and Dale. Elmer was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in George, and a 61 year member of the American Legion in George. Elmer loved to cook. At Thanksgiving and Christmas he would always make the turkey and dressing. He enjoyed playing bingo and would take his grandchildren along, making them listen to polka music there and back. He enjoyed fishing at the Missouri River with his friends and also fishing and trapping with his grandchildren. He enjoyed organ music. He would take his grandchildren to Okoboji and he would listen to the organist while the grandchildren would roller skate. He was especially proud of farming, even after retirement he enjoyed helping on the farm with what he could. In October of 2006, Elmer became a resident of the George Community Good Samaritan Center where he died this past, Saturday, March 21st at the age of eighty-four. Elmer is survived by three children; Judy and her husband, Harry Faber of Rock Rapids, IA; Dennis and his wife, Ellen Hansmann of George, IA and Dale and his wife, Jennifer Hansmann of Parkersburg, IA; six grandchildren, Gina Heath, Brett Faber, Chad Hansmann, Marni VandeKamp, Megan Hansman and Jamie Kuhne; thirteen great-grandchildren; two step brothers, Richard Hansmann of Harris, IA and Fredrick Hansmann and his wife, Ruth of Lake Park, IA; along with a step sister, Louise Hansmann of Harris, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Lena; step mother, Minnie; and three, brothers, Carl, Walter and Kurt Hansmann.
