Stanley was the son of Clayton Mitchell and his wife Carrie Baker. Stanley married Ruth Foster on October 21, 1921 at Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Stanley and Ruth had two sons. Captain Mitchell was a Connecticut River boat pilot. "In 1927, Mitchell received his pilot's certificate, permitting him to guide incoming tugs and their barges up the channel to Hartford. He held both a pilot's and master's licence. He retired in 1966".
