Reuben was the son of Clayton Mitchell and his wife Carrie Baker. Reuben served in the Untied States Army during World War I. He was a Private in Battery B, 103rd U. S. Field Artillery Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Force. He was on the troop transport ship "Baltic" which left New Jersey for France on October 9, 1917. Reuben married about 1921 to Helen Martin of Middletown. Reuben and Helen had three children, a son and two daughters. Reuben was a mariner.
