Was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing, Minnesota as Johan Fredrik but went by Fred legally his entire adult life. His social security number was issued as Fred Ek.

In the 1920's he served as school superintendent for Tomahawk Public Schools in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. He was a member of the editorial board of Who's Who in America, and was a former member of the University of Chicago Press.

Survived by his wife, daughter, three grandchildren, and one sister. His son Karl died in a Japanese POW camp in 1943.
